Posted Date: 02/02/26 (09:02 AM)

Augusta Public Schools has announced a formal partnership with Southwestern College to strengthen Augusta High School’s future teacher pathway while establishing a sustainable grow-your-own educator framework for the district.

This partnership aligns Augusta Public Schools with the outstanding work being done in Southwestern College’s education program and reflects a shared commitment to developing high-quality educators who are prepared to meet the needs of today’s classrooms. Located just 39 minutes apart, this regional partnership provides Augusta High School students access to rigorous, high-quality college opportunities while remaining close to home.

The collaboration is designed to intentionally connect high school students, college preparation, and classroom experience in a way that supports both student success and long-term workforce needs in education.

As part of the agreement, Southwestern College will award five partial scholarships annually to Augusta Public Schools students entering the education program. These ED Builder scholarships will be up to $24,000 with the opportunity to qualify for additional grants, scholarships, and financial aid. Additionally, the partnership includes an agreement to place three Southwestern College student teachers in Augusta schools each year, further strengthening the district’s instructional pipeline and classroom support.

Other key components of the partnership include aligned commitments to high-quality teaching best practices, professional development opportunities for USD 402 staff, and direct support for students pursuing careers in education.

This partnership also reinforces Augusta Public Schools’ commitment to investing in future educators by providing students with early exposure to the teaching profession and a clear pathway into postsecondary education and employment within the region.

“This partnership with Southwestern College represents a strategic investment in the future of our schools and our community,” said Matt Ward, Superintendent of Augusta Public Schools.

“By strengthening our teacher pathway at Augusta High School and building a grow-your-own framework, we are creating clear opportunities for Augusta students who aspire to become educators while also supporting the long-term staffing needs of our district.

Southwestern College’s strong education program, combined with our shared commitment to high-quality teaching practices, professional learning, and student support, allows us to offer meaningful college opportunities close to home. This partnership reflects our belief that developing great teachers starts early and is best achieved through intentional, aligned, collaboration.”

Southwestern College leaders emphasized the value of building regional partnerships that prepare future teachers through real-world classroom experiences and strong mentorship opportunities.

“The Southwestern College Division of Education recognizes Augusta Public Schools’ commitment to provide every student with a quality teacher. To this extent we are pleased to offer scholarships to USD 402 students interested in the teaching profession. Augusta’s proximity to Southwestern College provides a perfect opportunity for USD 402 to grow their own teachers.”
